Simulateur de Vol de Icare/Ecarts

Le spectacle Icare/Ecarts, de la compagnie KDanse, est une chorégraphie complexe sur le thème de Icare, du vol et de la relation de l'homme avec la technologie.

J'ai collaboré à ce spectacle en proposant, concevant et réalisant une pièce interactive conçue spécialement pour quelques scènes de la chorégraphie : le Simulateur de Vol.

Le Simulateur est visuellement plutôt abstrait et minimal, et est projeté sur un large écan au milieu de la scène. Il est ineractif avec le danseur, en ce sens que le danseur pilote 'l'avion' en utilisant son corps (le Simulateur a une caméra pour voir le danseur) : si le danseur se penche à droite l'avion aussi et tourne vers la droite, si le danseur se baisse, l'avion plonge vers le sol, etc.. Les sons produits par le Simulateur (des sons d'avion réalistes et abstraits), basés sur des samples conçus par Jacky Emerit, sont mixés en temps réel avec les sons de la chorégraphie.Le comportement du Simulateur est purement réactif : il n'a pas d'autonomie. Il vole juste en fonction de la position du danseur. Il peut s'écraser au sol (et ensuite redémarrer). A la fin de la chorégraphie, selon le scénario, l'avion traverse le 'ciel' et part dans l'espace infini et blanc.

Le Simulateur a une grande présence dans le spectacle. Bien qu'il ne soit pas autonome, il projette le danseur dans un espace virtuel, bien que dramatiquement réel.

Le Simulateur est une partie d'une collaboration plus large en cours avec la compagnie KDanse, autour des systèmes autonomes dans le travail chorégraphique.

Techique : le Simulateur est programmé avec Macromédia Director et l'Xtra trackThemColors pour le tracking de mouvement dans le flux vidéo en provenance de la caméra. Les visuels sont réalisé avec Shockwave3D. Le moteur de phisique est propriétaire (en lingo). Le Simulateur est controllé à distance par l'ordinateur principal à travers le protocole OSC, et en utilisant une Xtra OSC maison.

Icare/Ecarts' Flight Simulator

The Icare/Ecarts Choreography, of the KDanse company, is a complex choreography on the theme of Icare, flight and the relationship between man and technology.

I have collaborated to this choreography by proposing, designing and building an interactive artwork especially designed for a few scenes of the piece : the Flight Simulator.

The Simulator is visually abstract and minimal and projected on a large screen in the middle of the stage. It is interactive with the dancer, in that the dancer pilots the 'plane' using his/her body (the Simulator has a camera to see the dancer) : if the dancer bends to the right, the plane does too and truns to the right, if the dancer bends down, the plane plunges towards the ground, etc... The sounds produced by the Simulator (realistic abstract plane sounds), based on samples designed by Jacky Emerit, are mixed live with the sounds of the choreography. The behavior of the Simulator is purely reactive : it has no autonomy. It just flies according to the position of the dancer. It can crash (and subsequently restart). At the end of the choreography, according to the scenario, the plane goes through the 'sky', and into the outerspace, which is white.

The Simulator has a strong presence in the choreography. Even though it is not autonomous, it projects the dancer in a virtual, though dramatically real, universe.

This Simulator is part of a larger collaboration going on with the KDanse company, around autonomous systems in choreographic work.

Technicals : the Simulator is programmed using Macromedia Director and the TrackThemColors Xtra for the movement tracking from the live video feed from the camera. The visuals are made using Shockwave 3D. The physics engine is custom made (in lingo). The Simulator is controlled remotely by the main computer though the OSC protocol, and using a custom made OSC Xtra.
